As winter transitions into spring, Floridians are enjoying the beautiful weather which allows us to throw our windows open and let the fresh air in. However, we are all aware that as spring moves into summer, those windows will serve a different purpose entirely – to keep our homes cool by sealing in the A/C, and to protect us from severe storms. While window safety and maintenance is an important part of any homeowner’s insurance policy, they are essential to those of us in Sarasota and Bradenton.
Consider Kids and Pets
Having windows and sliding glass doors open wide feels amazing this time of year, but be aware that open windows can represent a safety risk for children and pets. Even a first story window is high enough for a small child to fall out and injure themselves, not to mention then being outside alone. The National Safety Council recommends keeping any furniture away from open windows, keeping windows closed and locked if children or pets are not in your line of sight, or installing a device that will restrict how far the window can be opened.
If you have a second story, do not count on screening to prevent a fall. Surround the home under the windows with shrubs or bushes which can cushion a fall.
Window Safety – Your Exit Plan
While many people never open certain windows, it is important to make sure all of your windows unlock and slide open easily. In case of emergency, you’ll want to make sure that any window can be utilized to exit the home if necessary, so nailing windows shut is never recommended. Child locks or latches that cannot be reached by small children are appropriate. (Read more about ASTM F2090 regulations for window locks)
Once children are school age, they should know how to unlock and open the windows in your home. Help you whole family identify their escape route should there be a fire or other emergency, and practice opening and exiting.
Maintain a Safe Barrier from Intruders
Window safety also means creating strategies to keep intruders out of your home. Keeping windows secured and locked is a logical first step, but make sure any locks or guards open from the inside. Window alarms and impact-resistant films or screens will provide additional security without blocking the way in an emergency.
Protect Yourself from Hurricanes
Any home built after 1996 in Florida has impact resistant windows, as they were required by building code. However, those windows are now 25 years old and may require an upgrade for optimum window safety. Windows rated for hurricane protection have come a long way, and often not only protect your home from flying debris and high winds, but can also keep out harmful UV rays. Supplementing impact windows with hurricane shutters can give you the assurance that your windows will withstand any storm – and will also allow you to get better homeowner’s insurance rates.
