There is nothing worse than coming out of a store, finding your car, and realizing you’ve been hit. If the driver is a good person, they will stick around or, at the very least, leave a note on your car with their contact information so you can get in touch with them about repairing your car. There is just about no situation in which being hit while parked could reasonably be considered your fault—but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do anything. Here’s what you need to do:

Find witnesses.

If you are near or inside your car when you are hit, the first thing you should do is look around for witnesses. Can anyone attest to the fact that your car was parked when the person hit you?

Document the accident.

Even if the damage is relatively minimal, it is a good idea to take pictures of it to document when exactly the damage occurred and what it looked like directly after the accident. You might want to ask around to see if there are any cameras in the area that might have caught the accident for even more concrete evidence.

Call your insurance company.

As with any accident, now is the time to call your insurance company and let them know that you have been in an accident. You will, understandably, be upset, especially if the person hit your car and left the scene without providing any information to you so you can be reimbursed for any damage that might have occurred to your vehicle. Your insurance company will be able to help you take the right steps to get your car repaired and to find the perpetrator.
