During cold and flu season, we do everything we can to keep the germs at bay. We wash our hands, wipe down grocery carts, and diffuse essential oils – but you may not consider the need to disinfect germs in your car.

Whether transporting the kids for carpool or breathing recycled air, our cars can be a breeding ground for sickness.

Even here in the Bradenton and Palmetto area, unexpected cold temperatures and visitors from all over the country can make winter miserable.

Here are some tips to create a healthy environment in your car in 2019.

Disinfect Germs in these 5 Areas

The National Center for Biotechnology Information has studied germs in cars, and found that they tend to proliferate in some common areas.

  • The Steering Wheel:It only makes sense that all germs from your hands will transfer to your steering wheel. If anyone else drive your car, such as your spouse or teenagers, the chances of a germ-covered steering wheel increase. Wipe down your steering wheel with disinfecting wipes every time you get in the car, even if no one else has used the car.

This will help to kill any germs which may be lingering on your hands as well.

  • The Cup Holder and Compartments:Food and drink commonly spill over into crevices in the cup holder, and can be difficult to keep clean. If the cup holder is removable, take it out and thoroughly clean and disinfect. If not, clean as best you can with a disinfecting wipe, and clean hard to reach areas with a q-tip dipped in alcohol or interior cleaning solution.
  • The Dashboard, Door Handles and Window Controls:We don’t realize how many areas of our car our fingers touch during even a short trip. These areas can be especially germ-filled as they are routinely touched by your passengers as well. Much like wiping down gym equipment after use, killing germs after each passenger rides in your car is a smart way to stay healthy.
  • Seats and Upholstery:

Most people don’t even notice the crumbs that fall and the dirt that accumulates, unless they are especially cognizant about keeping their car pristine. Food particles will eventually grow bacteria, and fabric seats are breeding grounds for germs they come in contact with.

During the winter when immunity tends to be lower, keeping the car vacuumed is a great measure of prevention. Pay particular attention to car seats, which are known to be among the dirtiest surfaces in either car or home!

  • Recirculated Air:A major culprit of airborne illness is your car’s air system. Whether heat or air conditioning, if you often keep your windows closed and recirculate the air in your car’s cabin, germs are flying everywhere. You can replace the air filter more frequently, and some choose to spray it with a scent-free disinfectant before installing. (Scents are fine, but keep in mind you will smell it for a long time!)

You can also clean your air vents with wipes and cotton swabs to ensure that air flowing through does not pick up any nasty germs. If you need help, just ask your local auto mechanic.

Cold and flu season is difficult enough to endure. Make your car a place of healthy sanctuary – disinfect germs by following these simple tips, and continue using them year-round for optimum benefit.
