Florida living often includes vehicles that are not as common in other parts of the country – such as a golf cart for grocery runs, jet skis for weekend jaunts, or utility trailers for hauling gear. While these vehicles represent convenience and enjoyment, they also come with risks.
Insurance for this type of property is often overlooked, but it’s an essential part of protecting yourself, your assets, and your liability. Whether you’re cruising the neighborhood in a golf cart or heading out on a jet ski for the weekend, it’s important to know what coverage you may need.

Laws and insurance requirements in Florida can change. The information provided here is intended for general guidance only. Always consult your insurance provider or a licensed insurance agent to review your specific situation and ensure you have the appropriate coverage.

Golf Cart Insurance in Florida

Florida law does not require insurance for basic golf carts used on private property or in most golf communities. However, if your golf cart qualifies as a low-speed vehicle (LSV)—meaning it can travel between 20 and 25 miles per hour and is equipped for public roads—then the state does require insurance including Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL).

Even if your golf cart doesn’t require insurance under state law, it’s still wise to consider it. Theft, vandalism, or damage from accidents can be costly, and liability coverage can protect you financially if someone is injured while you’re operating the cart. Many homeowners policies may offer limited protection, but often not enough to fully cover a serious incident. A standalone golf cart policy is often inexpensive and can give you greater peace of mind.

Jet Ski and Personal Watercraft Insurance

Jet skis and other personal watercraft are a staple of Florida fun, but they’re not without risks. Florida does not mandate insurance for jet skis, yet accidents on the water are not uncommon—and the liability involved can be substantial. From injuries to other riders to property damage from collisions, the financial consequences can escalate quickly.

Jet ski insurance typically covers liability, collision, theft, and even medical payments. Given the high number of recreational boaters in Florida, the chances of encountering an uninsured or underinsured individual are real. That’s why many policies also include uninsured boater coverage. While not legally required, insurance is often requested by marinas, lenders, or rental agencies, especially if you’re docking or financing your watercraft.

Beyond the Golf Cart: Utility and Boat Insurance

Florida law does not require separate insurance policies for utility trailers, boat trailers, or similar towed equipment. If your trailer is attached to a vehicle that’s properly insured, the towing vehicle’s policy may provide limited liability coverage. However, that coverage usually doesn’t extend to damage to the trailer itself or the contents inside.

If you have a high-end trailer – and rely on it for business or frequent transport – a dedicated trailer policy may be prudent. These policies can cover the trailer whether it’s hitched or not and provide protection from theft, weather damage, or accidents. Some homeowner’s policies may offer basic coverage while the trailer is stored on your property, but those protections typically fall short when it’s in use.

Other Recreational Vehicles: ATVs and UTVs
All-terrain and utility task vehicles are popular in both rural and suburban parts of Florida. Like golf carts and jet skis, they aren’t subject to statewide insurance requirements if used exclusively on private land. However, accidents do happen, and ATVs are especially prone to rollover injuries and theft.

A typical ATV insurance policy may include liability, medical payments, collision and coverage for accessories like winches and custom parts. If you ever plan to take your vehicle onto public trails or participate in organized events, insurance may be required by the park or sponsor.

Why It Matters

While these vehicles may not be regulated in the same way as cars or motorcycles, they still represent a financial investment—and a potential liability. Many owners assume their homeowners or auto insurance will cover these items, but that coverage is often limited or non-existent, especially when the vehicle is being used away from home.

Fortunately, insuring recreational vehicles in Florida is typically affordable, and policies can often be bundled with your existing coverage.
